Simon, I agree that box office receipt cannot be the only measure of a film's worth but I also don't know why it should not be taken into consideration at all. That measure sometimes saves me from slipping into my best elitist posture. I love "heavy lifting" personally but if I were making recommendation to young writers I'd tell them to watch that infamous curve of "Diminishing Returns." Thanks for your thoughtful response.
